The area was first inhabited by the Seneca tribe before they lost claim to the land in the Big Tree Treaty. Rochester was founded by English-Puritan immigrants after the American Revolution. Later, landowners merged their lands to form the Rochesterville village. After 10 years, Rochesterville became the seat of Monroe County. The village population had grown to 2,500, and its name had changed to Rochester. With the advancement of railroads in the area, Rochester’s population grew massively, leading to the elevation of its city status. Rochester grew from “the Young Lion of the West” to a “Flour City.” It was the leading flour-producer city in the US. Its population doubled in 10 years, resulting in the area becoming the first booming City in America. The post-Civil War era saw the emergence of new industries in the city. With the founding of its outstanding public parks, railroads, and a Cunningham automobile, Rochester was a thriving and livable city. The emergence of new industries resulted in an influx of people in the region. This resulted in massive population growth. The growing industries have fueled Rochester’s economy to what it is today.
