Before European colonization, the Lenape occupied the land that would become Westchester County. They were an Algonquian people, divided into tribes like the Tankiteke, the Manhattans and the Weckquaesgeek. Verrazzano visited the region in 1524, and Hudson in 1609. The Ditch began settling the area in the 1620s, and England in the 1640s.

Westchester County was formed by the New York General Assembly in 1683, and in less than 100 years it had become the richest county in the Province of New York. However, it remained primarily rural until the 20th century, when it became more and more devoted to the suburbs of NYC.
