History of Westchester County New York

The original occupants of Westchester, the Algonquian-speaking Wappinger Indians, were driven in the 1640s by Dutch colonists by the Hudson River and by New England colonists along what is now the Connecticut border; the majority of the Wappinger relocated westward in 1756. The Province of New York absorbed Westchester following the surrender of New Netherland to the English in 1664, and the county was designated one of the state's initial counties in 1683. Chester, England, was the inspiration for the name. In the American Revolution, it was the location of major military activity, including the Battle of White Plains on October 28, 1776, a campaign by British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton in 1779, and the capture by the Americans of British spy Major John André near Tarrytown in 1780. Today, however, it is a diverse blend of cultures and scenery that makes it a unique destination.
