History of Queens County New York

Brooklyn History Kings County New York

The area of Queens County in Long Island offers abundant sustenance to its native settlers. The bays and creeks are rich in fish and other water resources. Grapes, strawberries, and walnuts grew in the wild. The Native Americans led an agricultural life.

The first Europeans who set foot on the island were the Dutch. While the Dutch were settling in the area, Englishman started to arrive from the north and east. The English accepted the Dutch form of government. In 1642, some English took lands in Maspeth with the approval of the Dutch government. However, the settlement was destroyed after a year when a war between Native Americans and the Dutch broke down.

Although the Native Americans and English managed to exist with each other, they had a conflict with the Dutch, forcing the Indians to move out from the Long Island. Another reason why the Indians left Long Island is because of the smallpox epidemic which occurred in 1658. It was assumed that about two-thirds of Indians were killed from the illness.
