The Dutch were the first people to settle in the region, which is now known as Queens County. The settlements began in the 1600s; people living there were subjected to Dutch law until the English captured the colony in 1664 and renamed it New York. Queens County was created on November 1, 1683, together with the other twelve counties of New York. Queens County originally included the area that now comprises Nassau County. Queens and other New York counties remained under British occupation after the Battle of Long Island in 1776.
Queens County comprises five towns: Hempstead, Flushing, Jamaica, Newtown, Oyster, and Bay from 1683 to 1784. The North Hempstead town was added as the sixth town on April 6, 1784. Queens was incorporated as a borough on May 4, 1897, by a vote of the New York State Legislature. Two hundred eighty square miles was partitioned from Queens County to become Nassau County, and Queens Borough was officially recognized on January 1, 1898. Jamaica became the county seat of Queens County even though the county offices extend to nearby Kew Gardens.
Transportation to and from Manhattan was by ferry or bridges in Brooklyn until the Queensboro Bridge was opened in 1910 and the railway tunnels under the East River in 1910. From 1915, Queens County was connected to the New York City Subway system. With infrastructure improving, Queens County’s population began to grow and reached more than one million people for the first time in 1930. The world-renowned John F. Kennedy Airport, previously known as Idlewild Airport, was opened in 1948.

It is believed that Queens County got its name from Catherine of Braganza, who was the Queen of England when the English captured New York. Catherine of Braganza was Portugal’s royal princess Caterina and daughter of King John IV of Portugal. Queens County was founded alongside Kings County (Brooklyn), named after her husband, King Charles II. Richmond County (Staten Island) is also named after King Charles's illegitimate child, the 1ST Duke of Richmond. However, the namesake is disputed because there is no evidence of an official declaration.
