History of Bronx County New York
History of Bronx County New York
The Bronx is one of the five boroughs of New York. Originally a part of Westchester County, Bronx County was ceded to New York County in two separate parts; West Bronx and East Bronx. The European colonization of the county, which began in 1639, led to the conversion of the borough into farmlands. The area remained underdeveloped till 1841, when rail services began regularly between Manhattan and Bronx. Its central location between New England and New York (Manhattan) made it a hotspot for manufacturing companies. The county housed over 63 piano companies that employed over 5000 people in 1919. The influx of companies had a significant impact on its population, rising from 200,000 in 1900 to 1.3 million by 1930.
Bronx County, however, suffered a significant setback due to the presence of several bootleggers, gamblers, thieves and gangs in the county. This increased the crime rate in the country and led to massive migration out of Bronx County. The enormous migration saw the county's economy nose dive, which led to a drop in residents' quality of life.
The 1980s brought fresh air as the county experienced significant development. The 10-year housing plan development scheme spearheaded the rebirth of Bronx County. Church groups and grassroots organizations such as 'Nos Quedamos' also helped rebuild the county.
