History of New York County New York
History of New York County New York
New York County's history can be traced to 1524 when Florentine explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano became the first documented European to visit the area. He sailed to the area now known as The Narrows and named it New Angouleme, which was a reference to the family name of King Francis I under whose service he sailed to the area.
The area wasn't mapped until the arrival of Henry Hudson, who came across Manhattan Island and its native people in 1609. Permanent European presence began in 1624, with the Dutch taking control of the area. A bit of tussle ensued between the Dutch and English, and the area was lost and regained by both parties several times. It was eventually officially ceded to England in November 1674 through the Treaty of Westminster.
New York County played a significant role during the Revolutionary War as it was at the heart of the New York campaigns. The county was the British military center of operation in Northern America. However, they were driven out in 1783.
