Nassau County was discovered in 1899 after the division of the larger Queens County. The western part of Queens County became a borough of New York City in 1898, leading to the secession of three towns from the county. Nassau County has a rich history, dating back to the early 1800s. European settlers were some of the earliest inhabitants of this county. Other early inhabitants were Native Americans made up of the Massapequa, Matinecoc, and Sacatogue. The nearby New Netherland had Dutch settlers who took over some parts of Long Island. English settlers migrating from Connecticut took over the western parts of Long Island.
Nassau County has long been a site of various aviation trials and experiments. This is due to its extensive and well-structured flat land. The Hempstead Plains found within the county was the site of military aviators training for both World Wars. The area was also home to the Mitchell Air Force Base, the early developer of aircraft. The facility led to the establishment of several aircraft companies in the area. Mineola, part of the county, is where Charles Lindberg departed for Paris in 1927, completing the first nonstop trans-Atlantic flight from the United States.

Nassau County's name originated from Long Island's old name. Long Island was named Nassau after King William III of England for a period. The king was also part of the Dutch family.
