The English assigned the name Queens County, who also named Kings County after King Charles II. Queen Catherine of Braganza was the wife of King Charles II. In the 1990s, a sculpture of Queen Catherine was proposed, but violent protests citing the Queen's involvement in the slave trade caused the project's cancellation. However, the name was upheld to date.
