Nassau County was once the eastern 70 percent of Queens County. The county emerged in 1899 after the division of Queens County. Native Americans settled in the region before its establishment, but the Dutch and the English settlement led to its development.

The creation of Nassau County followed a series of meetings with general discussions. Benjamin D Hicks of North Hempstead served as the chairman of the meeting, and many call him the Father of Nassau County. He was a dedicated and committed individual, and he played a significant role in fighting for an independent county.

Nassau County provided extensive flat land for the development of the aviation industry during the two World Wars. Military aviators trained in the county, while installations such as Mitchel Air Force Base and other successful aircraft companies began there. The United Nations Security Council was also located in the county between 1946 and 1951. Meetings took place in Lake Success village, at the Sperry Gyroscope headquarters.

The county was predominantly farmland until World War II, when people migrated from the five boroughs of New York City in search of a suburban setting. Since then, the area has developed significantly to become one of the best counties to live in, in New York. The county has become one of the richest in the United States.

I will not emphasize the importance of names, but I can tell you how Nassau County received its name. There were various alternate designations the people considered as the name for Nassau County. Some people suggested “Bryant,” while others proposed “Matinecock,” which serves as the name of one of the villages in the county. There was a consideration to naming the county “Norfolk” because of its proximity to Suffolk County.

While these names made sense to many people, Nassau took the day because of its historical significance and advantage. Nassau was once the name of Long Island, and the people in the region determined that it was a suitable name for their county. It was also the name most people mentioned because of its connection to the Dutch Prince William Nassau, a member of the House of Nassau. Interestingly, orange and blue are the county colors, similar to the colors of the House of Orange-Nassau.
