The history of Orlando can be traced back to 1838 and the height of the Seminole Wars. to protect settlers from attacks by Indians, The United States Army built Fort Gatlin south of the present-day Orlando City limits. As a result, a small community began to grow around the Fort by 1840. The town was first known as Jernigan. It was named after the Jernigan family, who had established the first permanent settlement in the area. Jernigan established a post office on May 30, 1850. About six years later, the town officially changed its name to Orlando, and the U.S. Post Office embraced the name change in 1857. That same year, the town of Orlando was incorporated as a city having 85 inhabitants, 22 of whom were qualified voters. Orlando became famous during the years between the Spanish–American War and World War I. It experienced extensive housing development during the Florida Land Boom, thereby causing an increase in land prices in the 1920s. During World War II, many Army personnel were positioned at the Orlando Army Air Base and within reach of the Pinecastle Army AirField. Some of these servicemen remained in Orlando to settle and raise families.
