In 1821, two counties formed Florida, the west was called Escambia and the east was called St Johns. In 1824, St Johns County became known as Mosquito County and comprised most of central Florida. When Florida became a state in 1845, Mosquito County was renamed Orange County. It was aptly named, as this citrus fruit was produced over much of the land.

Orange County is Florida’s 11th county, originally a segment of St Johns County. Its original name was Mosquito County, after the nickname that the Spanish had given the coastline. Later on, the county name was changed to “Orange County” when it was named after the abundance of orange groves that were in the area. However, the success and growth of Orange County itself was largely aided not so much by the citrus fruit, but by the arrival of Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, theme parks that are still among the most popular in the world and attract millions of visitors each year to the state.
