Duval County was created in 1822 from St. Johns County on the same day as Jackson County. Before the arrival of Europeans, this area was inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Today, the area known as Duval County was once a French colony named Fort Coraline. Increased migration by Europeans led to the formation of Cowford, later renamed Jacksonville.
