History of Duval County Florida
History of Duval County Florida
Duval County was created in 1822, but its history goes back much further. The area was initially settled by indigenous Americans known as the Timucua, who lived along the banks of the St. Johns River. When the Europeans arrived, the area that was to become Duval County was home to the 16th-century Fort Caroline, a short-lived French colonial presence. Increased settlement was to follow later on when Cowford was established. This city was later renamed Jacksonville, after Jackson, who was the first military governor of the Florida Territory. Later, he was to become President of the United States.
