Orlando has quite a colorful history dating back to 1838 and the Second Seminole War. The United States Army built Fort Gatlin, just southeast of present-day downtown Orlando. The army established this fort to protect the area's settlers from the American Indians, known as the Jernigan and named after one of the first families to settle there. This settlement had grown quite substantially by 1840, and between 1850 and 1856, it expanded further towards the north. Finally, in 1857, the area became known as Orlando. There are many accounts and stories behind the name change to Orlando, and no one can quite pin it down. Some say a politician, Judge Speer, named the town after Orlando, a man who worked for him. Others say the name originated from Orlando Reeves, a sugar mill owner, yet others say he was a U.S. soldier who died protecting the town on sentry duty. All we know for sure is that Orlando remained and was incorporated in 1875. After the Seminole Wars, there was a population explosion during the 1875-1895 period. During this time, Orlando became the county seat of Orange County and the center of Florida's citrus industry, contributing to this county's namesake. In the 1920's Orlando's downtown was established, which was impacted by the Florida Land Boom. To this day, we can see remnants of the 20s in the charm that is Orlando city. World War II brought more feet into Orlando, so city officials converted the municipal airport into the Orlando Army Air Base. From this, it eventually became the present-day Orlando International Airport. Finally, we do want to pay our dues to Walt Disney World. After all, its opening in 1971 did usher in the tourism industry, countless theme parks, and entertainment, which is responsible for numerous avenues of employment today.
