Broward County was founded in 1915 from parts of Dade and Palm Beach Counties. Following the American Revolution, the British ruled the territory for barely 20 years until relinquishing it to Spain in the Treaty of Paris. Broward's first non-Indian residents arrived following the re-establishment of Spanish power.

However, 1821 saw the United States acquire Florida from Spain. Colonel James Gadsden, who surveyed today's Broward County for the first time in 1825, was not impressed by the land. In less than a century, a place that was once deemed "unfit for human habitation" has become the permanent residence of roughly two million people and the winter refuge of tens of thousands more.

As it exists now, Broward County is primarily a product of the industrial revolution. The sea, sand, and sun have been here for millennia, but the harbor, trains, and roads, although relatively recent developments, have drastically altered the area's topography.

The county was named after Florida's 19th governor, called Napoleon Bonaparte Broward. On April 19, 1857, he was born in Duval County, Florida. Unfortunately, his parents passed away when he was 12, and he had to fend for himself. Broward worked as a farm laborer, a riverboat deckhand and pilot, and a lumberjack, among other odd occupations.

Before the Spanish-American War of 1898, he made a name for himself by smuggling weapons to Cuban insurgents aboard his steam tug. He first joined politics in 1889 in the role of Duval County sheriff, a position he held until 1892 when he was re-elected in 1892 and 1896. Later in 1900, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives.
