The Tequesta tribe inhabited the Miami area for about 2,000 years before the arrival of Europeans. The Tequestas migrated to Cuba in the 1700s, after the arrival of Europeans. Florida's first governor, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, claimed the area for Spain in 1566, with a Spanish mission constructed in the city a year later. Britain and Spain successively took control of the area until Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1821. Upon taking over Florida, the United States built Fort Dallas on the Miami Riverbanks as part of an attempt to subdue and remove the Seminoles. This led to Miami becoming the center of the Second Seminole War. Miami is the only major city in the U.S. founded by a woman. A wealthy Cleveland native and local citrus grower, Julia Tuttle was the original owner of the territory upon which Miami was built. The city enjoyed tremendous growth during the Great Freeze due to the crops in the city being the only ones in Florida that survived. Julia Tuttle is known as the mother of Miami due to her ability to convince railroad tycoon Henry Flager to elongate Florida East Coast Railway to the city. On July 28, 1896, Miami was officially incorporated as a city with a population of over 300.
