The history of Franklin County can be traced to 1802, when a group of prospective settlers created the Scioto Company at the home of Rev. Eber B. Clark in Granby, Connecticut. They planned to form a settlement between the Muskingum River and the Great Miami River. The Scioto Company eventually met again and decided not to purchase the land along the Scioto River.
Originally a part of Ross County, the State of Ohio authorized the creation of Franklin County on March 30, 1803. Columbus became the county's capital in 1812 after surveyors had laid out the county.
