On April 30th, 1803, Franklin County, Ohio was first established as the Ohio government authorized its creation. In 1812, plans were made to position the city of Columbus, central in Franklin County, as the state capital. Quickly, the area was growing with the creation of a church, school, newspaper, statehouse, and penitentiary. The state capital was officially moved from Chillicothe, Ohio to Columbus, Ohio in 1816. Columbus became a city in 1834, crossing the threshold of a 4,000 person population.
Franklin County was a great place for the state capital due to the proximity to the Whetstone River (now known as the Olentangy river) and central location to the rest of the state of Ohio.
