Before Ohio became a state, Cincinnati was already growing with population and trade. The area was a late 1700s settlement that was originally called Losantiville which means “City across from the mount of the Licking River.” In 1790, the area was established as the Hamilton County seat and the name was changed to Cincinnati in honor of Roman hero Cincinnatus. During the Civil War, Cincinnati played a role in recruiting and organizing troops at Fort Washington. The city also served as a major player in the underground railroad, with many homes becoming a refuge. Through the late 1800s, the area grew so tremendously that it was for a time the most densely populated city in the United States. The combination of iron production, cloth production, meatpacking, and woodworking grew the economy and drew new residents in. And if someone mentions Porkopolis to you, that is due to a large amount of meatpacking that once came from Cincinnati.
