History of Cincinnati

History of Cincinnati

ohio history

From the beginning of its history, Cincinnati has been known as the "Queen City of the West." The history of Cincinnati began when Mathias Denman, Colonel Robert Patterson, and Israel Ludlow purchased eight hundred acres from John Cleves Symmes in 1788. The area was located at the northern bank of the Ohio River, which was opposite the mouth of the Licking River, and they decided to settle here. These three men established the area and named it Losantiville. In 1790, Arthur St. Clair, the governor of the Northwest Territory, established Hamilton County. He then made Losantiville the county seat, but he disliked the name Losantiville and decided to change it. So, on January 4, 1790, St. Clair changed the settlement's name from Losantiville to Cincinnati. The new name recognized Cincinnatus, the Roman citizen-soldier, and in honor of the Society of the Cincinnati. In 1802, Cincinnati was chartered as a town and then incorporated as a city in 1819. The city began to prosper as it met the needs of westward-bound pioneers who traveled on the Ohio River. There were 30 warehouses to supply civilian and military travelers, hotels, taverns, and restaurants to meet their dining and lodging needs. By 1850, Cincinnati's population grew to 115,435, and it was ranked the sixth-largest city in the United States. History also has it that there was never a shot fired in the city during the Civil War due to the Defense of Cincinnati and the efforts of the Black Brigade of Cincinnati.
