History of Cook County Illinois
History of Cook County Illinois
Cook County History
The Illinois General Assembly partitioned Cook County off from Putnam County in 1831. It was itself reduced by the partition of McHenry, Will and DuPage counties. In 1840, Cook County claimed just over 10,000 people. By 1910 it had more than 2.4 million people, and by 2019, it had grown to more than 5 million. However, its overall population has stayed mostly stable through the 21st century so far.
The land was mostly agricultural at first – there was nearly a Cook County condo in the 1800s. As the urban center of Chicago grew, Cook County was among the first to utilize road and rail networks to bring commuters into and out of the city every day. The suburban population truly boomed after WW2, and by the 1970s most of the region’s farmland had been converted to residential neighborhoods, suburbs and so-called bedroom communities. Chicago itself accounted for some 83% of the county’s population in 1940, but by 1990 Chicago contained only 55% of the total Cook County population.

How Cook County Got Its Name
Cook County was named after Daniel Cook, a prominent Illinois statesman. He served both as the state’s Attorney general and its U.S. representative, but it does not seem that he ever had any significant contact with Cook County itself.
