History of Illinois
History of Illinois
Illinois is an archeologist’s dream, with evidence of bands of Paleoindian hunters in the state dating back to more than 12,000 years ago, with the distinctive Clovis points of the time period discovered across the state. The Illinois Association for Advancement of Archaeology Illinois Archaeological Survey explores early culture in Illinois, from Archaic-period hunter-gatherers to an emergence of varied and complex Woodland cultures that included a shift to villages and farming. In the pre-Columbian era, the city of Cahokia arose as a major hub of Mississippian culture and economic power; today, it’s considered the biggest settlement of the pre-Columbian era found north of Mexico. (You can still visit the giant man-made mounds of earth and learn more about the settlement.)
European explorers first arrived in Illinois in 1673. Though French explorers were the first European settlers to make inroads in the state, Britain took control after the French and Indian War. Illinois officially became a state in 1818.

For example, according to the University of Illinois Illinois State Climatologist, the south of the state sees more than 48 inches of precipitation per year, compared to less than 32 inches up north . . . but it’s opposite when it comes to snowfall, varying from an average of 36 inches per year at the top of the state to less than 10 inches way at the southern tip.
