American Indian tribes such as the Miami, Potawatomi, Fox, and Sauk were the first settlers in the region that would later become Chicago. In 1673, the Marquette and Jolliet expedition crossed the Great Portage between the Illinois River and the Chicago River. Jean Baptiste Point du Sable was the first non-Indian to settle in the area in 1780. In 1803, the U.S. Army built Fort Dearborn on the south bank of the Chicago River, although an Indian raid destroyed it in 1812. The Army rebuilt the Fort in 1816, and in 1830, the Illinois and Michigan Canal gave the region a fighting chance. The state incorporated Chicago as a town in 1833 and as a city in 1837. At this time, Chicago’s population was about 4000 people. Chicago experienced exponential growth after the arrival of the first telegraph and railroad in 1848. The city also saw two innovations, the Boards of Trade’s wheat grading standards and grain elevators, which transformed the selling of crops. The city became the world’s largest grain port by 1854, and it had over 30,000 people who were mainly European immigrants. Chicago experienced social, economic, and population increase from the late 19th century because of developments such as a booming retail industry, the construction of the world’s first skyscraper, and hosting the World’s Columbian Exposition. Immigrants continued flocking to the city, and today, Chicago is a center of trade and one of the largest cities in America.

The first thing anyone should do in Chicago is explore the city’s art scene, starting with the Art Institute of Chicago. This institute features hundreds of thousands of art masterpieces..
