The Creek Indians occupied the area that is now known as Columbus and became one of the Five Civilized Tribes after European settlers settled in the surrounding areas. In 1828, Columbus was founded through an act of the Georgia Legislature. Columbus was initially located at the beginning of the navigable part of the Chattahoochee River as well as on the last stretch of the Federal Road right before entering Alabama. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, industries in Columbus expanded their production, making the town an important center of industry for the Confederacy. The Battle of Columbus took place on April 16, 1865, when the Union soldiers destroyed many of the industrial buildings in the city. Reconstruction began immediately after the war, and economic prosperity followed. The city's growth and expansion continued into the 20th century. Leaders established Columbus College, which would later become part of the University System of Georgia. The middle class began to withdraw from the city in the 1960s to 1980s because of the construction of highways and suburbs. Large residential houses were built in the early 1970s to accommodate the soldiers returning from the Vietnam War and those associated with Fort Benning. The city has been improved in certain areas to attract residents and businesses.

One of the things you can do is visit some tourist attraction sites in Columbus. One of the sites you can visit is the Coca-Cola Space Science Center. You can see Georgia’s largest collection of NASA Space Shuttle artifacts and other interactive exhibits. You can also test your piloting skills by participating in a simulated rocket launch. Another site you can visit is the Chattahoochee Riverwalk, a Columbus landmark that runs 15 miles along the length of the city and the adjacent Chattahoochee River. You can bring your bike and ride it or have a walk. You can visit other tourist attractions, including the Columbus Museum, Columbus Botanical Garden, National Infantry Museum, and Ma Rainey House and Blues Museum.

If you are a sports fan, you can watch and support your favorite sports team in Columbus. The Columbus Civic Center is home to several professional sports teams: Columbus Lions (Indoor Soccer), Columbus River Dragons (Baseball), and Columbus Rapids (Indoor Soccer). Columbus Chatt-a-Hoots, a baseball team in the Sunbelt Baseball League, usually plays its games at Golden Park. You can also watch games of major professional leagues in nearby cities. For example, if you are a soccer fan, you can watch Atlanta United FC play its Major League Soccer matches at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

There are many parks and recreational areas with facilities for various outdoor activities. If you love hiking or biking, parks such as Callaway Gardens have many trails for hiking, exercising, and biking. Other places with trails in Columbus include Oxbow Meadows and FD Roosevelt State Park. You can also go camping, picnicking, or fishing at Flat Rock Park. The Flat Rock Park is not very far from the Columbus Botanical Gardens, and it is one of the places to visit if you love the great outdoors.
