History of Columbus

History of Columbus

Before the European settlers arrived, the area now known as Columbus was territory belonging to the Creek Indians. The Creek Indians had treaty and trading relationships with the European-Americans who settled in the region. The Treaty of Washington forced the Creeks to move west, and many did but some remained. In 1836, the indigenous peoples who remained were subsequently forced off their lands. Columbus’ position on the navigable section of the Chattahoochee River helped facilitate the shipment of cotton from local plantations to New Orleans, and further on to international markets including Liverpool in England. Columbus’ location led to significant wealth in the area as textile mills were being built everywhere. By 1860, Columbus was known as a major industrial center in the region. After the Civil War, the city grew even quicker due to further industrialization. However, the downtown population declined as residents moved further out to the suburbs. In the 1990s, urban renewal and revitalization in Columbus commenced, and to this day, continues to be successful.
