Before the arrival of the white settlers in Collin County, Cherokee, Caddo, Tonkawa, Kickapoo, and Delaware Indians inhabited the area. After several incidents of violence between the Indians and white settlers, the Indians left Collin in the mid-1850s. The Indians didn’t have organized resistance, making it easy for more settlers to come to Collin, as they were attracted to fertile Collin soils and Peters Colony grants.
The first settlers were mostly wheat and corn farmers who inhabited along the rivers where they could easily access water and wood. While the slave and cotton economy characterized the South, Collin County didn’t participate. The farmers who settled in this area were from the upper South and had little or no experience in growing cotton. Also, Jefferson City, which was the nearest market, was 150 miles away, and there lacked navigable rivers and railroads to transport the cash crop to the market. The Houston and Texas Central Railway were the first to reach Collin County in 1872.
By 1890, railroads crisscrossed Collin County. It was now easy for farmers to transport the farm produce to the market. By 1920, Collin County had a dramatic increase in the number of farms and bales of cotton being produced.
Before Texas gained its independence from Mexico, Collin County was part of Fannin County. Collin was founded in 1847 after Texas got its independence. A year later, its county seat was moved from Buckner to McKinney. Buckner could no longer serve as the county seat as it was more than three miles from the center of Collin County.
Until 1927, Collin Courthouse was considered the tallest building in the state of Texas, north of San Antonio, with only two floors.

Collin County is named after Collin McKinney, and so is its county seat, McKinney. Collin McKinney was one of the first settlers in Collin County. He was a politician, merchant, land surveyor, and preacher. He was also among the five members committee appointed to draft the Texas Declaration of Independence. Being the oldest member of the committee, at 70, Collin was given the pen after the signing. McKinney played a huge role in the forming of boundaries in North Texas. He’s specifically remembered for insisting that the boundaries should be straight as new counties were being formed in North Texas.
