History of Dallas

History of Dallas

Historic West End Dallas Texas

The Caddo Indians were the original inhabitants of Dallas before the Spanish, and French colonists claimed the area. The Spanish ruled the Dallas area until 1821, when Mexico gained independence from Spain and Dallas became part of the Mexican State of Coahuila y Tejas. Later in 1836, Texas gained independence from Mexico, forming the Republic of Texas. Three years after Texas gained its independence, John Neely Bryan, a farmer, lawyer, and tradesman, surveyed the Dallas area accompanied by his dog and a Cherokee named Ned. He’d then return in 1841 to establish permanent settlements named Dallas. In 1845, the United States annexed the Republic of Texas, and Dallas County was formed the following year. The sixth Texas legislature granted Dallas a town charter in 1856, and Samuel Pryor was the town’s first mayor. It was until 1871 that Dallas became a city legally. In 1890, Dallas annexed the city of East Dallas, becoming the most populous city in Texas. By the 20th century, Dallas, initially an agricultural city, was now a sustainable industrial city. It was the world’s number one inland cotton market and the largest saddlery and cotton gin machinery manufacturer. In the early 20th century, the banking, fashion, insurance, and retail industries boomed in Dallas.
