History of Harris County Texas

History of Harris County Texas

Harris County History

Harris County, Texas has a long history which goes back to long before the region was a part of the United States, or even the Republic of Texas. Of course, there were no condos in Harris County in this historical period, but it helps to understand the character of a region by learning how it came to be.

Harris County is a land filled with ancient mystery. For some 4 thousand years, the area was home to a thriving Native American culture. But for some reason – and as to exactly why archeologists and historians still argue – the region was all but abandoned just over 2000 years ago.

It had its share of European explorers towards the end of that period, and surely it had native American travelers as well, but none stayed long enough to leave any traces we’ve been able to find. De Vaca visited the region, as did others. However, none came to stay until a schooner full of settlers actually ran aground near what is now called Galveston Bay. Most of them moved north over land, but at least one stayed to found the trading post that would one day evolve into Morgan’s Point, Texas.
When the land eventually passed from Spain to Mexico and then to the Republic of Texas in the early 19th century, Harris County finally came to be.

 Harris County Namesake

Harris County is ultimately named after one of the most successful early land owners in the region in its pre-Republic of Texas days. John Richard Harris was given a league of land near what is now called Buffalo Bayou to make what he could of. A Spanish league was around 4,400 acres, so it was no small steading.

On this site he laid out the first streets of Harrisonburg in 1826, building a grist mill and a small shipping empire in just 3 years. He died in 1829, but his legacy lives on. When you look at Harris County condos, think for a moment on John Richard Harris, and what the place must have been like nearly 200 years ago.
