History of South Dakota
History of South Dakota
Around 17,000 years ago, South Dakota became more than just a vacant piece of land as early settlers began to inhabit it. They were primarily hunters and gatherers. Fast forward to the sixteenth century, the Arikara began arriving from the South. They were far less nomadic than any of their neighbors and lived in permanent villages. They were skilled traders and acted as intermediaries between north and south. Due to this trading, Spanish horses first reached the region around 1760.
Eventually, after reaching the heights of their power, after a century their villages lessened. Due to greater food availability, the Sioux began to migrate to the south. Even though the land was occupied, a huge part was still unsettled and unexplored. Therefore, the Lewis and Clark expedition followed the route of the Missouri river to its source and established diplomatic relations with various tribes in the area.
In 1861, the Dakota Territory was established by the U.S government. Settlers from various places like Germany, Ireland, and Russia flooded in. Due to increased migration, Dakota was then divided into North and South Dakota. In 1889, South Dakota officially received its statehood.
