Another event promoting the city, included the iconic visit of President Calvin Coolidge in 1927, which also marked the beginning of the work on Mt. Rushmore. Cedar Rapids has witnessed its fair share of economic downturns and natural disasters, such as the 1972 Rapid Creek flood that remains the worst natural disaster in the history of South Dakota. However, the city was able to recuperate and today remains a bustling center of commerce.
