The name Sioux Falls is taken from the waterfalls of the Big Sioux River and its early settlers which are the Sioux Tribe of American Indians. Most of the buildings in Sioux Falls that were constructed in the past were made of pink quartzite which serves as proof of their hard work as well as their total commitment to the community. Prior to the Civil War in 1856, the early settlers managed to live on the banks of the Big Sioux River. By 1880, its population grew to 2,100. In 1876, the village of Sioux Falls was established. Later on, in March 1889, it was declared a city. During the turn of the century, the city has grown rapidly and its population has reached more than 10,000. From then on, the population of Sioux Falls has grown by more than 10,000 every decade. In fact, in 2009, it reached 150,000. Sioux Falls, which is one of the largest cities in South Dakota, is bordered by Iowa and Minnesota. It can be found at the intersection of Interstates 90 and 29, along the Big Sioux River. Sioux Falls is in the eastern part of South Dakota. You can easily reach some of the major Midwestern cities within a few hours' drive. Sioux Falls is the county seat of Minnehaha County. According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2010, the total area of the city is 73.47 square miles, the land is 72.96 square miles while water occupies 0.51 square miles. It has an elevation of 1,470 feet.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Sioux Falls has a total population of 192,517. In 2010, its population was 153,888. The residents in this city are dominated by 83.7 percent White, while the rest are a mixture of Hispanic, Asian, Black, and those with two or more races. The median household income in Sioux Falls, SD is $61,73 with a total household of 73,818.

Originally, the major industries in the city were quarrying and agriculture. However, during the last century, its economy was more diversified and service-based. Sioux Falls is now the center of health care, financial services, and retail trade. Furthermore, Sioux Falls is home to some of the major financial companies, such as Citigroup and Wells Fargo, most probably because they do not impose state corporate income tax.

The city is also a regional health care center with major hospitals such as Avera McKennan Hospital, Sanford Health, the Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota, and the South Dakota Veterans Affairs Hospital. Other major companies that have headquarters in Sioux Falls include Lewis Drug, Raven Industries, POET, SONIFI Solutions, Sunshine Foods, and Midco.

About 10 miles north of Sioux Falls is where the USGS Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science is located. Here, you can find one of the biggest computer systems of the Department of the Interior.
