History of Sioux Falls

History of Sioux Falls

south dakota history

The history of Sioux Falls is intertwined with the cascades of the Big Sioux River, which have attracted people for thousands of years since their creation around 14,000 years ago. The original settlers in the region that would later become Sioux Falls were American Indians such as Kansa, Osage, Omaha, Otoe, and Quapaw. The area has been home to numerous Indian tribes because of its beauty. European explorers visited the region in the 18th century, which led to more visitors who wanted to claim land around the falls. For instance, in 1856, the Dakota Land Company and Western Town Company claimed the land because of its beautiful falls and water power. While the population in the area started with 17 men in 1856, it increased to 40 in 1857. The two groups saw the potential for a promising townsite. The arrival of the railroad and population increase led to significant growth in the late 1800s, and the state incorporated the city in 1876. The Dakota Territorial Legislature granted Sioux Falls a charter in 1883 when the city had slightly over 2,000 residents. The population increased to more than 10,000 by the end of the 19th century. The increase occurred despite the challenges of the national depression and a severe plague of grasshoppers. The 20th century was a successful decade for Sioux Falls because of developments throughout the 1900s. The opening of the John Morrell Meat Packing Plant in 1909 and the founding of an airbase and military radio and communications training school in 1942 influenced the city’s growth. More developments such as interstate highways influenced the city’s population and economic growth. Today, Sioux Falls is the most populous city, yet one of the best in South Dakota.
