History of Rhode Island

Adrian Block, a Dutch explorer, named Rhode Island in reference to the red clay that bordered the coast. He dubbed it "Roodt Eylandt," which means "red island." Europeans later changed the name to Rhode Island under British rule.

Native Americans were the original inhabitants of the ocean bordering state. Although they died out for different reasons, a portion of their history is preserved in Roger William’s A Key into the Language of America.

Did you know that Rhode Island was the thirteenth and last of the original colonies to become a state?

After being expelled from Plymouth, Massachusetts, for his "extreme beliefs" on freedom of speech and religion, Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, constructed the first actual working model of democracy.

Although Roger Williams assisted them in brokering the bargain with the Narragansett in 1637, Rhode Island, also known as Aquidneck Island, was established by a distinct group of European colonists.

As the inventor of the thoughts and values embodied in The First Amendment, Roger Williams was officially acknowledged by Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.  Freedom of speech, religion, and freedom of public assembly were among those ideals.

Newport was once known as the country's most opulent summer retreat. As a result, Newport is home to many first achievements, including the United States' first gas-lit street, the first U.S. Open in golf, the first U.S. Open in tennis, and the first-ever speeding ticket issued by judge Darius Baker for a car. Newport is also home to the oldest library and several other historic buildings. However, Newport's most notable feature is its ancient "summer cottages." Most of them serve as museums now, giving visitors a glimpse of the country's famed "robber barons" during the Gilded Age.

Here are some interesting facts about Rhode Island’s history:

  • Rhode Island was the first state to abolish slavery

  • It is also home to the country’s oldest carousel

  • The coast of Rhode Island has 21 lighthouses
