In 1642, the Narragansett Indian Chief named Sachem Miantonomi agreed to accept 144 fathoms of Wampumpeague (white shell beads) in return for land that included present-day Coventry and West Warwick. This purchase made between the Indian chief and Samuel Gorton is known as the “Shawomet Purchase.” In 1648, Robert Rich, Earl of Warwick and Governor in Chief for the Colonies, granted Gorton a charter after which the name of the region was changed from Shawomett to Warwick. It wasn’t until 1772 that the first serious conflict arose between the British crown and the local patriots. The locals decided to board the British revenue cutter HMS Gaspee and attempted to take control of it during which the commanding officer of Gaspee was shot with a mullet. The locals went further on to set the schooner ablaze. This event, known as The Gaspee Affair, was one of the inciting incidents that started the American Revolution. Warwick militiamen participated for both sides during the American Revolution and in 1891 they were present for the surrender of the British in Yorktown. After the American Revolution, Warwick saw immense growth and development. One of the main causes was the Industrial Revolution.
