The history of Providence dates back to 1636. The city was formed by Roger Williams, a redeemed Baptist Theologian and religious exile. After being forced to flee Massachusetts Bay Colony due to religious persecutions, Roger bought land from Narragansett Indians and established a new settlement with a religious and political freedom policy. He, therefore, named his new haven "Providence" to glorify God for His protection from Massachusetts. Providence was among the first cities to industrialize. Through the easily accessible waters, it turned into a significant world seaport. It was also known for its textile and industrial manufacturing industry dealing in jewelry, machine tools and silverware industries. It is also worth noting that its craftsmen supplied items to the Continental and the French armies during the Revolutionary War. Later on, big companies were opened close to and within this city, including Brown and Sharpe, the Grinnell Corporation, Corliss Steam Engine Company and Gorham Manufacturing Company. In the 1970s, extensive developments like infrastructure and downtown and commercial districts were made. This induced rapid growth of the city, attracting further settlements. The city's robust economy has continued to thrive for decades till today.
