Cranston is sometimes called the "Gateway to the Northeast Kingdom" and the "City of Firsts" due to its history as the first city in the country to ban racial discrimination. Cranston was founded in 1638. The Cranston city we know currently was acquired from the Narragansett Indians as part of Roger Williams' Pawtuxet Purchase in 1638, and the first resident in the region was William Arnold. Stephen Arnold from Rhodes Family erected a gristmill on the Pawtuxet Falls and planned out the Arnold Road which we called Broad Street that connected it to the Pequot Trail, which led to Connecticut. Benedict Arnold's son was the first Governor of Rhode Island under the 1663 charter. The Town of Cranston was established by the General Assembly in 1754 after r were unable to agree on a name for a new town for decades. Historians have different opinions about the name of the city. Some argued that the town was named after Governor Samuel Cranston while others hold the opinion that the city was named after his grandson, Thomas Cranston. Cranstonians voted in favor of a resolution against the British Parliament's Coercive Acts during town meetings conducted in the early 1770s at the taverns of Caleb Arnold and Nehemiah Knight, and the town largely backed the Patriot cause during the Revolutionary War. Cranston became a city on March 10, 1910, after losing most of its area to surrounding towns and the city of Providence over the nineteenth century.
