Cranston is sometimes called the "Gateway to the Northeast Kingdom" and the "City of Firsts" due to its history as the first city in the country to ban racial discrimination. Cranstonians voted in favor of a resolution against the British Parliament's Coercive Acts during town meetings conducted in the early 1770s at the taverns of Caleb Arnold and Nehemiah Knight, and the town largely backed the Patriot cause during the Revolutionary War. Cranston became a city on March 10, 1910, after losing most of its area to surrounding towns and the city of Providence over the nineteenth century.
