History of Savannah

History of Savannah

Historic River Street in Savannah Georgia

Referred to as America's first planned city, Savannah's history dates back to the arrival of James Oglethorpe and other 120 passengers along the Savannah River. After establishing solid relations with Tomochichi, the chief of the Yamacraw Indians, Oglethorpe began carrying out his plan of laying out Savannah. The plan consisted of alleys, squares and streets that gave the city a different look from other American cities. With the help of Georgia Trustees, Oglethorpe managed to conceive Savanna and the new colony of Georgia. The colony was initially established to help poor England, increase imperial trade and protect Carolina from the Spanish in Florida. As Georgia grew, Savanna lost its political significance as the colonial capital and became a port city. The port exported goods like rice and cotton during colonial times. Like many coastal cities, Savannah suffered its share of catastrophic fires, diseases and flooding. Fire destroyed approximately 463 buildings in the city, while the outbreak of the yellow people saw 6,000 of 7,528 residents evacuating the city. A significant hurricane swept out the rice and cotton plantations and greatly affected the port and shipping area. Despite these disasters, Savannah experienced tremendous growth, which was later slowed during the Civil War. It established interests in slave ownership, small business, land ownership and agriculture. At this time, Savannah was regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the US. The population of Savannah continued to grow, with several colleges and universities opening their doors in the city. Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, the world's leading corporate aircraft manufacturer, greatly fueled the city's economy. Today, Savannah is a popular tourist destination due to its historic preservation and notable landmarks that attract visitors worldwide.
