History of Savannah

History of Savannah

Historic River Street in Savannah Georgia

The first people to settle in the Savannah area were Native Americans. The Yamasee and Creek peoples both had villages in the area, and the Yamasee built a village called Oyster Point near downtown Savannah. These Native American groups used the river for fishing and trade. The first European settlement in the Savannah area was founded in 1733. This settlement was established by James Oglethorpe, an English general and philanthropist. He had been granted a large land area along the Savannah River as a charity colony for several thousand poor debtors from England who could not afford to pay their debts. Oglethorpe named the new colony Georgia in honor of King George II of England. The new territory was intended to be a refuge for English Protestants and a buffer between the Spanish in Florida and the British colonies on the mainland. The first settlers in Savannah were mainly men from Scotland, Germany, and Switzerland. They had arrived on two ships named Anne and Mary. As more settlers arrived, they began to build houses and establish farms. The city of Savannah was officially founded on February 12, 1733. The original town plan was designed by Oglethorpe and is still used today. It consists of 24 squares, each named after a different English colony. Savannah takes pride in its rich history. And you can be part of this by finding yourself land for sale in Savannah, GA.
