The tribes of Ute and Shoshone were the first settlers of the western Salt Lake Valley. While the Latter-day Saints were the first European residents in the area. It was in 1847 when the Euro-Americans settled in the Salt Lake Valley. Joseph Harker and his family were the first ones who claimed the area and called it "over Jordan." The Welsh pioneers were the first settlers of the Granger area in 1849. Agriculture and irrigation were developed in the community. In 1930, Granger and its surroundings were occupied by approximately 1,000 residents. In 1876, the Hunter area was occupied by August Larsen, Edward Rushton, Rasmus Nielson, as well as seven other people along with their families. In 1881, irrigation was developed and fruit trees were their major crop. Rapid growth started in the 1970s. During this time, the area that is now known as West Valley City comprises four individual communities including Granger, Redwood, Hunter, and Chesterfield. Finally, these four separate areas merged and formed West Valley City.

Based on the information from the United States Census Bureau, West Valley City has a total area of 35.5 square miles. Water has an area of 0.1 square miles while land occupies 35.4 square miles. West Valley City can be found between the Oquirrh and Wasatch mountain ranges, particularly on the northwest portion of the Salt Lake Valley. On the east side is the South Salt Lake, while on the west side is the Magna Township. On the north side is where Salt Lake City is located and on the south portion is the Taylorsville and Kearns Township. The Jordan River flows on the eastern portion.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2020, West Valley City has a population of 140,230. This is composed of 56.7 percent White, 2.7 percent Black, 5 percent Asian, 40 percent Hispanic, and 5.4 percent with two or more races. The city has 37,078 households and a median household income of $70,427.
The economy of West Valley City greatly depends on its major industries including manufacturing, construction, and retail trade. The highest paying industries in the city include utilities, mining, agriculture, quarrying, forestry, extraction of oil and gas, hunting, and fishing.
