The Native American tribes of Lenape first occupied the county of Philadelphia before the arrival of Europeans. The first Europeans to step foot in Philadelphia were Swedes and Finns, who arrived in 1638. The Netherlands seized the area in 1655, but England hijacked it in 1674. William Penn received his charter for Pennsylvania from Charles 11 of England in 1681.

At inception, Philadelphia consisted of the Delaware River west between the Schuylkill River to the south and bordered Bucks County to the north. The Counties of Berks and Montgomery were formed out of Philadelphia County in 1752 and 1784, respectively.
