The 1700s saw the first European settlers arriving in Erie, a region that was originally the territory of the Iroquois confederacy. As soon as the French and English arrived, the two nations started battling for the land. The two nations often involved Native American proxies and allies in what was coined the “French and Indian War.” At the end of the 18th century, the land was eventually sold to the American government by the Iroquois and Seneca tribes, to be known as part of Pennsylvania.
