Philadelphia has been known as the City of Brotherly Love for the longest time. But how did it come about its name? After William Penn made the friendship treaty with the Lenape chief, he named it Philadelphia. The word Philadelphia is a Greek word that means Brotherly Love. Technically, "Philos" means love or friendship and "adelphos" means sibling. For this reason, Philadelphia is well known as the City of Brotherly Love. The first people to inhabit Philadelphia were the Native American tribes, particularly the Lenape hunter-gatherers. In the 1600s, the Swedish, English, and Dutch merchants established trading posts in the North Delaware Valley area. In 1684, a ship named Isabella came carrying hundreds of enslaved people, which led to the 1688 Germantown petition against slavery. From here, Penn's colony thrived and attracted big names such as Benjamin Franklin, who became the Pennsylvania Gazette publisher in 1729. In 1790, Philadelphia became the capital of the United States, and by then, it was the biggest city with over 44,000 residents. It was in Philadelphia where the first Bank of the United States was founded and where the US Constitution was written. In Philadelphia, William Lloyd Garrison established the American anti-slavery society. The members adopted the old state house bell as a symbol, after which they renamed it the Liberty Bell. Outside Independence Hall, Susan B. Anthony delivered the Declaration of Women's Rights in 1876.
