History of Greensboro
History of Greensboro
Like a lot of cities, Greensboro is named for someone and that person is General Nathaniel Greene who led the American forces in 1791 at the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Guilford Courthouse in 1781. According to the Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau, the original name of the city was spelled without the final “e” that was in the general’s last name. Permanent settlement in Greensboro began in 1740 and those early settlers included Germans, Scotch-Irish, and Quakers. Greene’s deployment of troops caused the British to lose a quarter of its army which hastened its eventual defeat. In 1808, elected officials paid $98 for a 42-acre tract of land which became Greensboro. Guilford Courthouse is now a national park located at the western end of town. From its early beginnings, Greensboro went on to become part of United States history. In the 1960s, four students from North Carolina A&T held sit-ins at the Woolworth’s lunch counter that was downtown. That store is now the International Civil Rights Museum and it opened in 2010. When textiles were a leading industry in North Carolina, one leading company was Cone Mills. That was started by Moses and Caesar Cone of Baltimore, Md. While Cone Mills is closed, the Cone legacy lives on with Moses Cone Hospital.
