Before European colonizers arrived in modern-day Greensboro, the area was home to the Indigenous Saura people. Other Native American people also inhabited the region for thousands of years, typically along the natural waterways. In 1750, migrants from Pennsylvania arrived at Capefair, which is now known as Greensboro. The village became a Quaker community as settler Quaker families flocked to the spot. Residents then changed the town name to Greensboro in honor of Major General Nathanael Greene, who fought during the Revolutionary War. Colonizers bought land from the Saura for $98 and erected three north-south streets and a courthouse. There was a small population of 369 in the village in 1821. However, it underwent a developmental and population boom in the early 1840s after the state government added the settlement as one of the stops on a new railroad line. This phase gave rise to the nickname “Gate City,” as it became a transportation hub for Piedmont. After the Civil War, the town garnered the attention of investors to restore the textile mills and related industries. By 1900, the city had developed into the center of the Southern textile industry, leading to the city’s economy and population growing even more. Greensboro was an important part of the Civil Rights Movement as it still enforced segregation in the early 1960s. As a result, Greensboro and the rest of North Carolina experienced sit-in protests, eventually leading to the desegregation of public spaces. The most significant civil rights protest in North Carolina took place in Greensboro in 1963. This protest aimed for public accommodations to become desegregated and economic and social justice. This rally also worked towards integration in public schools in the state. In 1979, the Greensboro Massacre occurred when members of the Communist Workers Party (CWP) held an anti-Ku Klux Klan rally. While the rally took place, Klansmen and neo-Nazis arrived, which led to the two groups exchanging gunfire. Five CWP members lost their lives during the clashes, 11 CWP members sustained injuries, and only one Klansman was injured.
