History

History

history arkansas

Lincoln was founded in 1856 as the village of Lancaster on the salt basin and became the county seat of the newly formed Lancaster County in 1859. The first attraction to settlers was the availability of salt, a common meat preservative formed through boiling away water in the vats. However, the development of salt mines in Kansas by Steve Harlington rendered salt a non-viable commodity. In 1956, captain W.T. Donovan, a former steamer captain, settled on the salt creek with his family. He was later elected to represent the Crescent company on salt production. Later in 1858, he abandoned the company for the Stevens creek settlement due to threats by Pawnee Indians. In 1859, the village settlers met to form a county. On March 1, 1867, Nebraska was signed a state of Omaha through an act signed by President Andrew Johnson. At that time, Omaha, situated in the Northern part of Platte River, was the state’s capital city. The inconvenience made the southern people petition for the new capital’s movement to their location. Several protests led to an amendment to remove the State Capitol from the capital city. On that same note, the capital city was voted to be replaced by Lincoln city. Therefore, between 1867-and 1868, the first capital in Lincoln was constructed. Lancaster became Lincoln on August 14, 1867, thus the new capital city of Nebraska.
