Before European colonizers arrived, the state of Nebraska was home to many different tribes of Native Americans. Plains Indians inhabited Salt Creek, which is in the modern-day Lincoln area. The Pawnee people, a group of four tribes, lived along the Platte River. The Great Sioux Nation, including the Ihanktonwan-Ihanktonwan and the Lakota, used the state as their living and hunting grounds. Lincoln was founded in 1856 and was then known as the village of Lancaster. The town was based on the east bank of Salt Creek as the settlers wanted to take advantage of the abundance of this commodity. By 1868, the county homed around 500 people, who renamed the area Lincoln, which was incorporated in 1869. The city welcomed its first train in 1870, followed by two more in 1871 and 1872. By 1892, Lincoln had become a rail hub. In addition, the Omaha-Lincoln-Denver Highway was established in 1911 and ran through Lincoln to accommodate the increase in automobile travel. The city was also the location of three airports and one airfield in the early years of air travel. These developments led to an economic, developmental, and population boom in the city. The city's population increased from 55,000 in the late 1800s to over 75,000 in 1930. In 1969, the city started its urban renewal and revitalization process. City officials then began to focus on the downtown and the near South areas, erecting the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, new branch libraries, new street lighting, the First National Bank Building, and the National Bank of Commerce Building.

Historic Haymarket District. The area is cozy and unique, being the location of beautifully renovated brick streets, late 19th-century brick warehouses, an enormous water tower, and a fascinating clock.

Nebraska State Capitol. Builders started constructing the 400-foot tower in 1922, which depicts 3,000 years of democracy through carvings and its ornate interior of marble columns, mosaic floors, and murals.

The Sunken Gardens. The gardens, which were founded in 1930 and renovated in 2004, have become one of the treasures of Lincoln. The gardens consist of the Healing Garden, where all the plants bloom white, the Perennial Garden, and the Annual Garden, where employees used more than 30,000 plants to create new designs and themes.

Pioneers Park Nature Center. The park, which is 668 acres, displays what the Great Plains used to look like before European colonizers arrived. The park comprises eight miles of hiking trails with herds of bison, white-tailed deer, and elk. Visitors might also spot red-tailed hawks, barred owls, and wild turkeys.

Sheldon Museum of Art. This museum is the abode of over 12,000 pieces of art, with the main focus being American art. Notable art in the museum includes works from Mary Cassatt, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Andy Warhol.
