Lincoln was built in 1856 on the east bank of Salt Creek, and at that time, it was called the village of Lancaster. The abundance of salt in the vicinity drew people to the city first. However, as soon as Morton developed the salt mines in Kansas, salt in the village ceased to be a valuable commodity. After passing the Homestead Act in 1862, people started moving into the area. By the end of 1868, Lancaster had about 500 people living there. When Lincoln became a city on April 1,1869, it changed its name from Lancaster. In 1869, the state gave a land grant of 130,000 acres to the University of Nebraska, making it possible to build the university in Lincoln. Due to the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad's arrival in 1870, Lincoln became a major railroad junction for routes from Chicago to Denver and Kansas City, Mo. In the 1890s, the city had 19 rail lines. Railroads provided Lincoln's most important industry by locating major repair and locomotive shops in Havelock.
