A History of St. Louis County
After the British took over the French colonies on the far side of the Mississippi, some French colonists chose to move farther west. Many of them settled in what would become St. Louis County, and the city of St. Louis was founded in the late 18th century. It did not become part of the US until the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
The city of St. Louis voted to separate themselves from the county around them in 1877, and the county’s population would not rival the city’s until the 1960s. A new county seat was built on land donated by Ralph Clayton, which became the city of Clayton.
After WW1, there were many towns formed and public schools opened. WW2 saw the region become more industrialized, but by the 1960s people began moving from the city to the smaller towns and suburbs. By the 1970 census, 1½ times as many people lived in St. Louis County as in the city of St. Louis.
