A History of St. Louis County

After the British took over the French colonies on the far side of the Mississippi, some French colonists chose to move farther west. Many of them settled in what would become St. Louis County, and the city of St. Louis was founded in the late 18th century. It did not become part of the US until the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

The city of St. Louis voted to separate themselves from the county around them in 1877, and the county’s population would not rival the city’s until the 1960s. A new county seat was built on land donated by Ralph Clayton, which became the city of Clayton.

After WW1, there were many towns formed and public schools opened. WW2 saw the region become more industrialized, but by the 1960s people began moving from the city to the smaller towns and suburbs. By the 1970 census, 1½ times as many people lived in St. Louis County as in the city of St. Louis. The long and the short of that is that it is reasonably easy to rent a condo in St. Louis County, Missouri these days.

How St. Louis County Got Its Name
St. Louis County was named after the city of St. Louis, the original county seat. It was named after France’s King Louis IX, a crusader who was canonized as ‘Saint Louis’. This St. Louis was the patron saint of King Louis XV, who led the country during the colonization. Ultimately, though, there are several towns called ‘Saint Louis’ in France, and they would have been named for the same king-turned-saint.
