History of Springfield

History of Springfield

missouri history

Springfield was originally the settlement area for the Kickapoo, Osage, and Lenape Indians. The Us Government enforced Indian removal from the area and relocated them to Kansas reserves. After Nathaniel created Greene county, small settlers began to occupy different parts, including Springfield, which received the most significant arrival. Arriving in Springfield was John Polk Campbell from Tennessee. Campbell established Junius Cambell's store and Jefferson Avenue before returning to Tennessee. The area then became a cabin settlement with other settlers invading the area. Springfield town was officially formed when John Campbell deeded 50 acres of the county seat. The city became the stop center of the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach line. This attracted more residents to the area. The town hosts over 1,200 people and boasts three hotels, five schools, a bank, two churches, and different business retails. The prosperous growing town was torn apart by the Civil War a few years later. The Battle of Wilson's Creek, which was the first major Civil War, occurred on the southwest side of Springfield. The town became the scene of Civil War conflict leading to the loss of many lives and many people fleeing out of the city. However, the post-war period saw the return of many more people who began rebuilding the town. The arrival of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway led to an economic boost for the recovering city. After some years, the city rapidly grew, with over 150 businesses in operation. The town became famous, gaining the name "Queen City of the Ozarks." Springfield was among the first cities in the nation to get an electric trolley. This paved Route 66, which saw Springfield becoming a vital transportation center. The completion of Route 66 was the turning point of the current modern city. The realization led to the establishment of cafes, gas stations, and motor courts, with its population reaching 60,000. The rapid industrial growth and the mother road "Route 66" led to the current modern city.
